Podcast celebrates stories of resilience

- BY HEATHER CARRICK

ANEWLANDS-BASED motivational speaker and author has launched a brand new podcast, helping listeners to practice resilience and hope in tough times.

Madeleine Black, 55, has made her name speaking across the world and has decided to bring her brand of hope and fighting adversity to the masses with her podcast Unbroken.

She said: “This time last year, I was standing in Nambia and then my entire diary was just wiped.

“The podcast is a way to still reach people during the pandemic, when I think we need to remind ourselves how important hope and resilience is.”

Madeleine has released her own book called Unbroken detailing her resilience story and has hosted Ted Talks on the subject before moving onto the new platform.

Launched in November last year, the podcast has already been a hit with listeners, with people from almost 50 countries tuning in and hitting the top 2% of podcasts across the world.

One of the big draws of the podcast includes interviews with stars such as athlete Colin Jackson, who opened up about his struggle with eating disorders while in the height of his career.

Madeleine, a former psychotherapist at the Tom Allan Centre in Glasgow, said: “It’s not about my story, but my guests’ stories of overcoming adversity.

“We’ve had some great guests on already, and the thing I like about it is that they are speaking about loads of different experiences all with the theme of resilience.

“Colin was great but it really did surprise me because he hasn’t been our most popular episode yet.”

Madeleine’s other guests include Mike Haines, whose brother was killed by ISIS in Syria, and actor Richard Laing, who has starred in productions such as Game of Thrones and Mamma Mia on the West End.

She said: “I think it shows that people are looking for these interesting stories. Some of them have been unbelievable, and while it might not be the cheeriest of subjects, the human story of powering through and remaining positive is something that we can all relate to.

“For example, Mike’s brother was killed by ISIS and the video was posted all over the internet, but he has said that he refuses to hate anyone despite the horrible situation that himself and his family have went through.”

The Unbroken podcast is available on all streaming platforms, with new episodes released every Wednesday at 9am.
