VISION FOR NEW-LOOK GOVAN SITE

- BY DREW SANDELANDS

PLANS for the first phase of the transformation of Water Row have been submitted to the council. Images show how Govan Housing Association’s proposal for 92 homes could look.

There is also 700sq m of commercial space included in the proposed development. Planning permission in principle was granted last July for the wider transformation.

The scheme aims to “reposition Govan as a popular, sought-after riverside town within the city and, as a direct result, help reduce the inequalities and deprivation experienced by the existing Govan community”.

Water Row “should be at the heart of Govan’s community life”, the plans state.

“A hub for social enterprise, a magnet for visitors and a key location at the heart of the proposed innovation district, as defined within Glasgow’s city development plan.”

In the first phase, there will be five blocks of flats and three will have shop units on the ground floor to host a “number of community focused commercial ventures”.

They will be two-bedroom flats available at mid-market rent.

The phase one site is bounded by the Clyde walkway, Water Row, Govan Cross and Linthouse Parish Church and the Riverside housing estate. It will be near to the new pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting Govan and Bellahouston to Partick and the West End.

There will be a further two phases, which will require detailed planning permission at a later date.

The Water Row masterplan for the regeneration of the area was approved in January last year. The £57 million scheme includes more than 200 homes and 3500sq m of commercial space.

A reduction in car parking spaces at the site from 200 to 22 has been proposed.
