Gerrard pride at anti-racist stance by SPFL

common cause. “I thought it was class and I thought it was class from both clubs,” Gerrard said. “Credit to all the people representing Celtic today. We knew what we were going to do.

“I spoke to Connor Goldson and James Tavernier on Saturday and they told me what they wanted the team to do and I backed them 100 per cent. We do as a club from top to bottom. But it was class from everyone today and it was great to see everyone on board.

“We need to change things and I believe we will eventually. We just need to keep pushing.”

Kamara issued a statement through lawyer Aamer Anwar on Friday evening as he detailed his version of events at Ibrox.

Team-mate Kemar Roofe was also targeted on social media following the defeat to Slavia.

It has been a testing few days for everyone at Rangers and Gerrard is full of admiration for the way that Kamara has handled the situation after he produced an accomplished performance at Parkhead.

Gerrard said: “He’s fine and I knew he’d be fine. I know the kid, I know his character having built a really strong relationship with him. He’s so low maintenance.

“He doesn’t want attention, he just wants to go about his business. He didn’t deserve what happened.

“He didn’t deserve it and it was bang out of order. He was deeply, deeply upset but his reaction has been fantastic because he wants to move on and he wants to play football.

“But one thing is for sure, Glen Kamara is loved at this football club and Kemar Roofe is loved at this football club and we’ll do everything we can to stand side by side with them as we do with all our players.”

Meanwhile, Gerrard reckons Alfredo Morelos’ first Old Firm goal will give him a major confidence boost ahead of further Celtic clashes in the remainder of the campaign. The striker finally opened his account against Celtic at the 14th time of asking and ensured Rangers maintained their unbeaten Premiership run.

It was his sixth goal in nine matches as he continued his fine recent form thanks to a typical poacher’s goal that saw him in the right place at the right time to nod home after Leon Balogun had connected with a Borna Barisic corner.

Rangers could have two further Celtic showdowns if they draw John Kennedy’s side in the Scottish Cup and Gerrard reckons the strike will be a weight off Morelos’ mind.

“I thought his performance again was selfless,” Gerrard said. “He did a lot of running and did well holding the ball up for us.

“He’ll be very relieved with his goal. We are because it should give him confidence and belief if we have to come here again this season.

“But credit to him because he’s scored big goals this season and you can’t get away from that. When you analyse the season so far he’s come up with big moments when you rely on your 9 to step up and score.

“But he should take a lift from that goal because the longer it goes the more people talk about it. He’ll have been aware of that.

“But with Alfredo it’s never through lack of trying. He’s a winner and he wants to win.

“He always tries to be a threat and unfortunately it hadn’t happened for him against Celtic before today.

“But it’s gone now and I think he’ll bounce into the next Old Firm with a lot of belief and confidence.”
