Mother and son duo are true paper craft stars
TALENTED city residents are showing off their skills in our new Times Talent competition. While many have entered the competition, which is supported by food ordering company Foodhub, with traditional talents such as singing and dancing, Glasgow’s artists have also put their hat in the ring to win the grand prize of £1000.
Marianne Troy, 36, from Penilee, has used lockdown to pick up a new skill in paper crafting.
She said: “I started doing the crafting in lockdown because it gave me and my son something to do in the house.”
Marianne’s son Kyle, 13, who has autism and ADHD, helps with the paper crafting which offers him an activity to concentrate on a project.
She said: “He helps with the folding because it is a lot of work.
“It really helps us to spend time together and also helps not only my son’s mental health but my own too.”
Marianne, with the help of Kyle, has created impressive paper sculptures of characters such as Simba from the Lion King, Santa Claus and characters from popular online game Among Us.
Marianne said: “I think my favourite is the stag, and it takes pride of place in my living room.
“I’ve had family members requesting all different kinds of characters and animals. A woman in London even offered to pay to fly me down and build her sculptures because she had seen my work.
“I would encourage everyone to get involved with paper crafting. They do take a bit of time but the result is always worth it!”
