New testing hub set for Drumchapel
DRUMCHAPEL’S Community Centre is to be transformed into a coronavirus testing facility, the Glasgow Times can reveal.
The Glasgow-Life run building has yet to reopen since the initial lockdown measures were brought into force last year.
A number of charities, such as 3D Drumchapel and the G15 Youth Project, call the Kinfauns Drive centre home.
However, next month the site will be turned into a testing centre for those with Covid-19 symptoms.
Glasgow City Council confirmed the changes would be going ahead although no further details were available.
It’s understood charities will be given the opportunity to remove any vital tools or equipment prior to the centre being taken over.
The new facility will join several other spots throughout the city, such as Ibrox and Linthouse as well as a number of mobile and asymptomatic testing points.
It’s not clear how long the centre will be used for testing, however, it’s understood it will become a walk-through hub.
Speaking about similar facilities previously, Lord Jim Bethell said: “New walk-in sites make it even easier to get a test no matter where you live.”
It’s understood the facility will operate under an appointment basis and more details on how to make them are expected to be made available in the coming weeks.
The area’s councillor Paul Carey insisted it was good news for the area, however, reiterated hope that the centre will be reopened to the public as soon as possible.
He said: “I am delighted that a testing centre is opening in Drumchapel – I have been pushing for as many as possible to open up in my ward.”
Glasgow Life has previously confirmed it was doing all it could to ensure the re-opening of its venues when it’s safe to do, despite suffering a major financial crisis as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
