Government denies claims of delay to UN summit in city

- BY STEWART PATERSON

THE UK Government is not looking to postpone the Cop26 summit, scheduled for Glasgow in November this year.

The event was put back by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and yesterday media reports suggested that it could be set to move yet again with cases still rising in many parts of the world.

However, the UK Government said while the situation was being monitored closely, it was working towards the event being held in person.

A UK Government spokesperson said: “We are working on the basis of Cop26 being held in person this November, while closely monitoring the Covid situation.

“The summit team is working closely with all partners and exploring what different scenarios might mean for Cop26 and how we plan for that, whilst putting the health of the participants and the local community first. We are not looking to postpone the summit.”

It is expected that delegates from around the world and several world leaders will be in Glasgow for the United Nations event on tackling climate change.

The UN Conference of the Parties summit in Glasgow is expected to be hugely significant in reaching agreement on international co-operation on tackling climate change, with hopes high that the result could be a “Glasgow Agreement” leading to policies securing the environment for future generations.

Depending on the Covid situation and vaccination progress in the UK and around the world, there could be fewer attendees than anticipated.
