Dancer Kai has ‘no fear’ as he aims to impress

- BY LAUREN GILMOUR

AHIP-HOP dancer with “no fear” is one of our latest Times Talent contestants hoping to be in with a chance of winning £1000. Ten-year-old Kai McDonald from Clydebank is among those vying to be crowned the winner of the contest, sponsored by food delivery company, Foodhub.

He started dancing when he was five, after his mum Michelle noticed he had no fear after teaching himself how to do backflips. She was encouraged to enter him into our competition by family and friends.

She said: “He’s really determined so I thought ‘I’m going to have to put him into something that he can learn to do all of these things safely. He started going competitive when he was six.”

Kai has even been to Los Angeles to perform in some of the top dance studios there. Throughout lockdown, Kai has been quite bored but has managed to do some of his classes on Zoom.

Michelle added: “He’s been bored through lockdown, so it’s been a shame. He’s not been able to do any of his classes face-to-face, most of them have been on Zoom, which is a totally different experience. But he’s taken it all in his stride.”

Inspired by award-winning dance act Diversity, Michelle said people often compare him to Perri Kiely from the troupe as he is so small for his age.

Kai is “constantly dancing” according to Michelle and will even stop for a boogie on supermarket aisles. Before lockdown, Kai could also be spotted busking in the streets with friends with a set of large speakers.

Our Times Talent competition is still open for entries until Thursday, April 8.
