Liam aims to hit right note in bid for top prize

- BY LAUREN GILMOUR

AN UPLIFTING pianist is the latest contestant in our Times Talent competition. Liam Kearney, 15, is one of those vying for the top prize of £1000 in the contest sponsored by food delivery company Foodhub.

The Milton teenager has been playing the piano since he was nine at the Bishopbriggs School of Music.

Liam’s mum, Elizabeth, said that he was inspired to take up the piano when he saw one of his older cousins playing one on holiday.

She said: “When he came home he asked if he could get a piano which was going to be impossible so he said he wanted lessons. He bought himself a wee 32in keyboard with his Christmas and birthday money. He outgrew that very quickly, so he took lessons and he’s not looked back since that.”

Liam has been using lockdown to learn new pieces including “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong which Elizabeth says has brought their family great comfort over the last year.

She said: “On hearing it, it reminded me we have had lots of blessings through a very difficult time.”

“It was New Year’s Day he played it and it was so beautiful. Because of the timing and all the things that had happened it just made you think: it is such a wonderful world.”

Liam said music has been a great stress reliever in lockdown.

He said: “It’s usually quite relaxing and a great stress reliever for me at least.

“I think playing the piano helped me get through it.”

He is hoping that the £1000 prize will help him save for the future including buying a new laptop and for if he plans to go to university.
