McMann confident Hamilton can survive

- JOSHUA BARRIE

HAMILTON may be bottom of the table with four games to go, but Scott McMann remains confident they will be playing Premiership football next season after losing narrowly to Dundee United in a game they dominated.

The Lanarkshire side’s performance merited three points, but Marc McNulty’s strike after six minutes took the points back to Tayside. Brian Rice’s men amassed 27 attempts on goal with no return. United keeper Benjamin Siegrist has at times almost single-handedly earned his side points this campaign, but on Saturday his clean sheet owed far more to Hamilton’s wasteful finishing than his own exploits.

“It seems to be the Hamilton way, it’s always backs against the wall and we’ve been unlucky with injuries this season,” the 24-year-old said after Rice named just five outfield players on his bench due to injuries. “We still feel we’ve got enough to get results and we’ve shown that today, we could have easily won that game.

“[We’re] obviously disappointed to lose, especially with the amount we put into it and how we played. But it gives us confidence going into the remaining games that with the squad we’ve got we can go and create chances and it will turn for us.”

Kyle Gourlay replaced the injured No.1 Ryan Fulton and it was his mistake that gifted United their goal. He snatched at a clearance which fell to Jeando Fuchs. He sent the ball into the path of McNulty, who kept his composure to score.

McNulty, 28, has not had a decent run of matches in his favoured No.9 role, but since being deployed alongside Lawrence Shankland he has performed well.

“It’s been hard to get a goal this season, but it was all about securing the club’s status in this league today and to get a goal and win the game was brilliant,” he said.
