McGregor vows to ‘shut up’ his critics

- DARREN JOHNSTONE

Lee McGregor admits he is desperate for the chance to shut up the critics who claim his points victory over Kash Farooq was a “robbery”.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said after Farooq’s recent win over Alexander Espinoza that he would try and set up a mouth-watering rematch between the Scots pair.

Commonwealth and European bantamweight champion McGregor is still angry about suggestions that he – not Farooq – should have lost on points when the pair first locked horns for the British title in Glasgow in November 2019.

And now the 24-year-old is open to the prospect of climbing back into the ring with Farooq to silence his detractors once and for all.

He said: “You don’t need to ask me, I would love to get the rematch. It was a close fight; people think Kash won, a lot of people think me.

“I don’t care what anybody says, it’s not a robbery. There is nothing I would take more pleasure in than shutting the critics up and putting that right. There is no way Kash Farooq gets that same Lee McGregor.”

Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua faces the possibility of being without trainer Rob McCracken against Tyson Fury as the much-anticipated all-British heavyweight showdown looks set to clash with this summer’s Olympics.

Eddie Hearn revealed the contest between two is inching towards being announced for late July or early August. McCracken, GB Boxing’s performance director, is scheduled to be in Japan between July 23 and August 8 for the rearranged Tokyo Games.
