Patterson pleased with team performance

- CHRIS JACK

NATHAN Patterson was pleased Rangers’ defensive efforts were rewarded against Celtic as they clinched a Scottish Cup win at Ibrox.

The champions set up a quarter-final clash with St Johnstone next weekend thanks to a 2-0 victory that was earned courtesy of a Steven Davis opener and own goal from defender Jonjoe Kenny.

Patterson earned rave reviews from manager Steven Gerrard after producing an accomplished performance on his first Old Firm start and he is now pushing for a place in the Scotland squad for the European Championships this summer.

The 19-year-old was impressive at both ends of the park and savoured another clean sheet that gave Rangers the foundation to go on and earn a third derby victory of a historic campaign.

Patterson told RangersTV: “It was great, right from the word go we were on it, and every man on that pitch played really well and I thought we deserved the win.

“The plan was just to go after

them right from the start and all the boys did that.

“We were right on the front foot and we deserved the goal early on.

“It was our aim to keep a clean sheet and we knew if we did that we would win the game. And that is what we managed to do. We have been really strong at home, it’s a fortress and that is why Ibrox is a hard place to come.

“We knew we just had to keep doing what we were doing.

“It will be a good challenge [against St Johnstone] but hopefully we can go and win the games and go even further in the cup.”
