Emergency talk bid after family attack
CALLS have been made for emergency talks into the attack on two parents enjoying a family day out with their children, the Glasgow Times can reveal.
As previously reported, a 30-yearold man and 26-year-old woman were rushed to hospital on Saturday evening with serious head and back injuries.
However, it has since emerged the couple’s young children witnessed the horrifying attack on their parents as the family enjoyed a picnic on a grassy patch of Blairdardie Road, close to the canal path.
An eyewitness claimed the youngsters hid behind a tree while the carnage unfolded.
It’s understood a gang of up to 20 youths were involved and an investigation has now been launched to track the thugs.
Members of the Old Blairdardie and Drumchapel Community Council has called on Glasgow councillors and local police to meet for a discussion as those living nearby have been left fearing for their safety following the incident.
A spokesman for the group said the community needed “reassurance” and admitted the spot where the attack took place has become a “problem” in the area.
Councillor Paul Carey said: “This terrible assault was carried out by number of youths; this family were terrified at the time and will be traumatised by this event for a long time to come. They are going to need significant support to help them cope with this terrible ordeal and overcome it.”
Bailie Malcolm Balfour added: “It beggars belief that this has happened to a young family out for, probably, the first time since lockdown. Everyone needs to step up to the mark here. There are people who know who did this and they need to come forward.”
Officers have released a description of a teenage boy and two teen girls who they believe may be able to help with inquiries.
The boy is described as aged 13 to 17 with brown hair and was wearing a bright yellow T-shirt and dark jogging bottoms.
Both girls are described as aged 12 to 15. One had long, dark hair in a ponytail and was wearing a dark T-shirt and black Adidas joggers with three stripes down the outside leg. The other girl had long blonde hair in a ponytail and was wearing a dark top, denim shorts or a short skirt, and white trainers.
Detective Inspector Kenny McDonald said: “This family were enjoying an afternoon in the sunshine when the parents were brutally attacked and we are keen to speak to anyone with information that can help our investigation.
“We know there were groups of younger teenagers around at the time, as well as older youths, some of whom may have been drinking.
“It is important that we speak to those who were there as they may have information that can assist our inquiries.
“There is also continued anti-social behaviour in this area and officers are carrying out patrols.
“We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and work towards bringing those responsible to justice and make our communities safer places.”
