Jags go top as title rivals slip up

PARTICK THISTLE moved top of League One last night with a 2-0 win over Dumbarton at the Rock.

The scores were tied at 0-0 for the vast majority of the game before late strikes from Zak Rudden and Motherwell loanee Ross MacIver sealed a huge three points for Ian McCall’s men ahead of the split.

Thistle are now two points clear of Falkirk in pole position after the Bairns dropped points on the road against Peterhead.

Morgaro Gomis’ dismissal for the visitors on 75 minutes made life difficult for the promotion-chasing outfit and they were made to pay just five minutes later when Jason Brown gave Jim McInally’s men a vital three points that pulls them away from the relegation play-off spot.

Thistle’s other title rivals Cove Rangers also suffered defeat last night, with Paul Hartley’s men unable to undo Fraser Fyvie’s first-half own goal against Montrose. With the clock winding down, Cove’s night then went from bad to worse as Ryan Strachan was sent off in stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Airdrieoni­ans strengthen­ed their grip on a place in the play-offs with a 2-0 over East Fife at the Penny Cars Stadium.

Dale Carrick scored twice – once from open play and once from the spot – to keep the Diamonds ahead of Montrose in fourth with four games left to play in Scotland’s third tier.

And in the evening’s final clash, Clyde gave their League One survival hopes a huge boost after defeating Forfar 3-1 at Station Park.
