Biker points finger at teen for crash
ASPEEDING biker who fractured a 13-year-old Celtic fan’s skull after ploughing into him later appeared to blame the victim for the crash.
Scott Donaldson, 27, was on his Suzuki when he crashed into the young boy near Parkhead stadium minutes before a European match on August 8, 2018.
Donaldson was travelling at 42mph at the point of impact on the Clyde Gateway.
As well as the head injury, the teenager also suffered a fractured leg.
He returned to Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday having earlier pleaded guilty to causing serious injury to the boy by dangerous driving. It emerged at the hearing Donaldson told a social worker compiling a pre-sentencing report that the boy had appeared from behind a car at a set of lights.
Sheriff Tom Hughes said: “He said in his report he was at a set of lights and there was some blaming of the victim.
“He said he was coming from behind a parked vehicle which bears no resemblance to the narration. He is lucky he isn’t at the High Court. He is lucky he did not kill the boy.
Defence counsel Neil Shand stated: “He knows he is responsible for dangerous driving.”
Donaldson was ordered to do 300 hours unpaid work and tagged for one year keeping him indoors between 7pm and 7am as well as a driving ban.
The court earlier heard the boy was walking with his stepdad to the Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens.
Prosecutor Chris Farrell said: “Witnesses could hear revving of a motorbike engine.
“It was believed the bike was travelling too fast due to the number of pedestrians on the street.
“The boy was crossing the Clyde Gateway and was hit with the bike which was travelling at 42mph at the point of impact.”
The boy was rushed to hospital and spent six days inside being treated for his injuries. He has fortunately made a full recovery.
Donaldson meantime also suffered a broken collar bone and left wrist.
His lawyer Shand said Donaldson was remorseful and had not driven since.
