Campbell insists no holds barred for Montrose

- IAIN COLLIN

CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL, 2ND LEG

ROSS Campbell watched dad, Dick, mastermind the stalemate that consigned Morton to a relegation shoot-out – but insists Montrose will have to do it all their own way if they are to reach the play-off final.

A boring goalless draw would be enough for the Gable Endies at Cappielow tonight after they came from behind to snatch the advantage of a 2-1 Saturday’s first leg.

It was a blank scoreline that Dick’s Arbroath managed against Ton on the last day of the season to keep his own team in the Championship and leave the Greenock side battling for survival in the division.

But, despite picking Campbell senior’s brains, playerassistant Ross reckons now is not the time to over-complicate the message to the Montrose players.

He knows that from painful experience after they took a 2-1 lead into the second-leg two victory in years ago – only to suffer a 5-0 hammering from Queen of the South.

He said: “It isn’t just Dick, if anyone has good information on Morton we’ve been trying to take advantage of that.

“I don’t phone him for advice on every single match, like some people think. But we’ve got loads of tapes on Morton and other people have given us information. I’m good friends with players in the Arbroath team, like Jason Thomson and James Craigen.

“With us being a goal up and them being at home, it’s well in

the balance. But, as anybody who has followed Montrose in the last couple of years knows, I don’t think we’ve got a cautious style.

“We play football with an energy and an enthusiasm, and we’ll probably just carry that on and not over-complicate it.

“Two seasons ago, we were 2-1 up against Queen of the South and the second-leg was the Stephen Dobbie show and they won 5-0. It was ridiculous.

“I think we were just over-thinking it and over-complicating it, whereas I think we just need to play our game.”
