Driver mounted pavement and aimed motor towards playpark

-

A DRIVER mounted the pavement and aimed his car at a playpark in a desperate bid to flee cops.

Fahid Majid was caught driving a motor without a valid MOT in Glasgow’s West End on November 23, 2019.

Two officers were out on mobile patrol when they saw the 24-yearold driving along Kirkland Street in the West End.

Depute fiscal Lauren Ram Sangray gave the court details of the incident, which happened around 1.10pm on that Saturday.

She said: “Officers carried out a check on the vehicle’s registration plate and noticed the vehicle did not have a valid MOT.

“The vehicle was requested to pull in to the side of the road but instead the car proceeded to turn on to Kirkland Street.”

At this point police tried to use their own vehicle as a road block to stop Majid, who was going at “excessive speed”.

Ms Ram Sangray said: “The accused attempted to complete a turn in the road and police witnesses positioned their vehicle in the road in order to stop the accused from driving off.”

Majid shouted at police from the open window of his car so the cops left their vehicle and approached him. At this point he accelerated and mounted the pavement, heading towards the opening of Dunard Street Play Park. Majid then accelerated and sped off along the pavement.

His defence brief told the court Majid is a carer for his mum but gave no mitigation for the crime.

Sheriff Patricia Pryce said he was narrowly dodging jail for his crimes.

She said: “Reading the charge I thought it was serious and having heard the narrative I realise just how serious this was.

“The fact it took place outside a children’s playground is an aggravation. You could have been going to jail for this.

“You have got to address the reasons for your offending and address why you behaved this way, putting children at risk.”

Majid was disqualified from driving for 21 months.

He was put on a community payback order for 18 months and ordered to carry out 252 hours of unpaid work.
