Dance star ready for first major show
DANCE School of Scotland alumni James Lowrie will make his debut on the King’s Theatre stage tomorrow as part of Bat Out of Hell – The Musical.
Featuring iconic Meatloaf songs from the Bat Out of Hell album, including You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth and I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That), the musical is a romantic adventure about rebellious youth and passionate love, set against the backdrop of a post-cataclysmic city.
James, who’s originally from Cumbernauld, plays the role of
Denym, an “energetic” character he describes as “the cheeky little dancer of the town”.
The 21-year-old, who studied at The Dance School of Scotland for four years, is excited to return to Glasgow and perform at the King’s Theatre for the first time.
“My four years at The Dance School of Scotland were really the best years of my life, I would honestly not be here without them at all,” he said.
“When I was younger my Gran would take me to the King’s all the time and that was really where I fell in love with musical theatre.
“I remember seeing Cats, Wicked, Sister Act, The Bodyguard, everything that came to the King’s I would go and see.
“Then when I went to the dance school, anything that would come the dance school would go and see so that really was the theatre where all these huge West End touring productions would come to and where I fell in love with musical theatre.
“Getting to go back there it feels really full circle and I think it’s quite surreal.”
Having graduated from the Guildford School of Acting last year during the pandemic, James says it’s “exciting” to be back on the stage, especially as part of such a high energy show.
“I had people come to see it on Monday and they said ‘if you go in with the worries of the day it just

brushes away the cobwebs’. Before you know it its started and then before you know it its ended.
“It just hits you like a ton of bricks and it’s just so fast paced.
“It’s a ray of colour, it’s such a spectacle as well between the motorbike and fire, confetti and blood.
“All the key elements of musical theatre are thrown in this with these amazing rock songs.
“There’s nothing really you can’t love about it.”
While James hasn’t met Meatloaf yet, he’s hopeful that he’ll come and see the show during its run, but while in Glasgow he’ll have all his former teachers in the audience.
Although James lives in London now, he says it will be a special experience to come back to the city while living the dream he always wanted. I love Glasgow, I don’t think there’s a better city in the whole world” he said.
