Road closed after sinkhole
A BUSY road near Glasgow’s George Square has been closed after a sinkhole opened up yesterday morning.
North Frederick Street was closed to all traffic by emergency services.
Pictures from the scene show the sinkhole emerging in the middle of the road, with the surrounding road surface also warped.
Police Scotland was in attendance at around
11am and cordoned off the area.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area and plan alternative routes.
A van from gas distribution company SGN was on the scene to assess any potential gas leaks but it’s thought the sinkhole might have been caused by a burst water pipe.
Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for SGN, said yesterday: “We were called by the emergency services to North Frederick Street in Glasgow this morning in our capacity as the gas emergency service in Scotland.
“Our engineers carried out checks to our network under a sinkhole in the road and found our gas network to be unaffected.” A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: “Our roads inspector has been at the scene of the fault and has detected running water under the road surface. “We are now liaising with Scottish Water to establish the source of the running water and the cause of fault on the road.
“We are treating this as a priority but North Frederick Street remains closed at this time with one lane also closed to east bound traffic from George Square. “Drivers are advised to find an alternative route at this time if possible.”
A traffic bulletin read: “North Frederick Street is currently closed to all traffic at its junction with George Square due to a significant road defect. Road users should consider alternate routes.” Scottish Water was contacted for comment.
