Comedy treat set for pub

- BY NICOLE MITCHELL

APOPULAR city boozer is now running a comedy night featuring some of the biggest names on the circuit. McChuills bar, on High Street, will host Unchained Comedy Club on Thursday evenings with a variety of established and up-and-coming comedians.

Over the coming weeks, comedians appearing at the venue include Raymond Mearns, pictured, Susan McCabe and David Kay.

Manager Peter Byrne, who previously worked at The Stand Comedy Club, decided to use his connections in the industry after he realised the venue was a “brilliant” space for a comedy night.

Peter said: “I reached out to a few people that I know in the industry who have worked in comedy and they came down and they all agreed that this was a cracking space and it’s been a bit of a no brainer to have a comedy night in here.

“Everybody kept asking why haven’t they had one in the past because it’s such a nice place.

He added: “It happened organically, it wasn’t something I was striving to do, I just looked at the venue and thought ‘hang on a minute, I’m in a position where I could run something in here myself, get to see all my old friends and have a really nice Thursday evening out, hang out with some comedians and have a couple of drinks and just have a nice night’.”

Peter, who’s worked in comedy for around six years, says each week will feature an established comedian to headline the evening, but they will also try to feature a newer comedian too.

He said: “It’s a really exciting world to be in when you’re seeing people starting from doing their first ever five minutes on the stage to headlining, it’s an incredible thing.

“That’s why I got into comedy and I met so many amazing people.

“It gets into your blood.”

Co-founder of the comedy nights, comedian Bruce Morton, said: “Unchained Comedy is a beautiful, intimate comedy club with friendly vibes, top class talent, and great food available too.

“Conceived at the end of lockdown to help comedians and audiences back into the community, Unchained Comedy presents a weekly gig of blue-chip stand-up featuring the best performers on the scene and a valuable space for rising comedians.

“We keep prices low, quality high.”

Doors open for the 18+ events at 7pm with the first act beginning at 8pm.

Tickets cost £10 each, or £7.50 for students, and can be purchased on the door or booked online.
