TWO SISTERS BATTER WOMAN WHO FELL OUT WITH NEPHEW

-

TWO sisters battered a woman because she had fallen out with their nephew.

Deborah Gillespie, 34, and Shirlie-Anne Gillespie spotted their victim walking down Dunragit Street in Haghill.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard they left a nearby close to approach and attack the woman around 8pm on April 26 last year.

Both women began to punch and kick their victim on her head and body before dragging her by her hair.

Fiscal depute Jennifer Sillars said: “The witness was dragged to the ground by her hair and continued to be assaulted by the accused.”

A woman living nearby heard the disturbance outside her home and phoned the police.

Officers who turned up at the scene saw cuts and bruises on the victim’s face and body so an ambulance was called.

The court heard the injuries were superficial and medical attention was refused by the victim.

Both sisters were arrested and charged and Deborah said: “I want to take this to court.”

The defence lawyer for 34-year-old Deborah, from Haghill, said: “She was heavily under the influence of alcohol at the time and found it hard to accept what she had done.

“There was some type of incident that happened between the complainer and her 20-year-old nephew.

“She now thoroughly accepts responsibility.

“She has a difficult background. Her father was murdered 18 years ago, and her mum passed away in June 2019.

“She was in a long-term relationship with a woman who was a co-accused in this case but who died in January 2021.

“She has said she needs to get her life together and deal with her alcohol issues.”

Shirley-Anne’s brief said of the 32-year-old: “She accepts full responsibility.

“She has no previous convictions at all.”

Sheriff Mary Shields placed Deborah on a community payback order with 18 months supervision and a conduct requirement that she must attend alcohol and drugs counselling.

She was also placed on a tag that will keep her at home between 7pm and 7am for six months.

Shirley-Anne was also given a community payback order with 18 months supervision and the same conduct requirement.

She was hit with a tag keeping her at home from 7pm to 7am but for four months.
