CLIMATE MARCH SENDS CLEAR MESSAGE

- BY NICOLE MITCHELL

THOUSANDS of people marched through Glasgow yesterday for the Fridays for Future climate march. Participants gathered at Kelvingrove Park before making their way to the city centre, leading to several road closures and bus diversions.

The crowd was filled with young climate activists, many with their parents, calling on world leaders to “stop killing our planet”, and reminding them “there’s no planet B”.

Upon leaving Kelvingrove, a heavy police presence guided protestors along Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street, St Vincent Street, and then up to West George Street before gathering in George Square where a number of speakers took to the stage.

Speakers at the square included GMB’s Chris Mitchell and Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Despite chaotic scenes at city centre protests earlier in the week, the march was well organised with a cheerful atmosphere as music was played and activists chanted “What do we want? Climate justice. When do we want it? Now”.

Hundreds of spectators lined the streets and leaned out of windows to watch as the crowd made its way through the city, with many joining in as it went.

Today, more than 50,000 people are expected to march through Glasgow for the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice, according to Police Scotland.

Participants are expected to meet in Kelvingrove Park at the Stewart Memorial Fountain from 11am, before starting to march at 12pm.

The group will head along Kelvin Way, Argyle Street, St Vincent Street, West George Street, past George Square and down High Street before gathering in Glasgow Green for a mass rally.
