CITY UNI FOOTBALLERS BACK MOVEMBER IN MEMORY OF CAPTAIN

- BY AIDAN SMITH

AGROUP of Glasgow Caledonian University graduates are getting their moustache game on this November as they aim to raise awareness for men’s mental health.

A total of 17 of the university’s former football stars are taking part in the popular Movember movement, which is the leading charity across the world, aiming to change the face of men’s health.

The team tragically lost their friend, captain and teammate Jamie Shuttleworth earlier this year after a battle with mental health problems.

Jamie, who passed away aged 29, had been Head of Social at Newsquest Scotland, publisher of The Herald and its sister papers, since last September, after having worked for STV and Reach’s Scottish titles in social mediafocused roles.

More than £3000 has been raised in support of the lads and their moustache efforts are coming along nicely after 10 days of growth.

The team said: “We’re doing it to remember our good friend Jamie, who sadly passed away in May. It was a really tough time for us all, because he meant so much to each and every one of us.

“He encouraged everyone in our team to speak about their mental health, just as he did so candidly. We owe it to him to raise some money in his memory.

“He would have loved us all doing this – although I’m not sure how he’d have looked without his trademark beard. He had the best facial hair in the team and he would remind us of this at every opportunity!

“Some of the guys have never grown facial hair in their life before and you can tell by their terrible efforts. But at the end of the day it is all for a good cause!

“We want to thank everyone who has donated so far and if you haven’t already please give anything you can. We appreciate the support greatly.”
