University student fractured woman’s nose in pub brawl

- BY CONNOR GORDON

AUNIVERSITY student fractured a woman’s nose in a pub brawl. Donna Farrell, 38, turned on Kelly Hollis at the Hielan Jessie in Glasgow’s Gallowgate on August 30, 2019.

The pair argued amid a dispute Hollis attended a night out Farrell was on that she was not invited to.

There were further claims that the victim made homophobic remarks before she was repeatedly punched. Farrell, who studies community development at the University of Glasgow, pleaded guilty to assaulting Hollis to her injury.

The court heard Hollis was on a night out and went outside the pub to speak to friends for them to come back inside.

Farrell approached Hollis and said: “You better leave, you know what’s going to happen.”

Prosecutor Sean Docherty told the court Farrell lunged at Hollis and repeatedly punched her on the face.

Docherty added: “She ended up bent over and Farrell punched Miss Hollis to the back.” The pair were separated by members of the public and the matter was reported to the police by the victim.

She was later taken to hospital for treatment to a “nasal fracture”.

Lorna Clark, defending, told the court that as part of Farrell’s degree she works with underprivileged youths and the elderly. The lawyer stated this is put on hold due to the court proceedings.

She added: “Miss Hollis attended a night out she was not invited to.

“An argument took place between them and Miss Hollis made homophobic remarks towards her and her partner.

“The argument escalated and the fight broke out and she became involved.

“She acknowledges her actions were excessive and she acknowledges the victim would have been in a great deal of distress and hurt by her behaviour. She is remorseful for her actions and the consequences of them are wide reaching.”

Sheriff Shona Gilroy tagged Farrell, of the city’s Parkhead, for 120 days keeping her indoors between 7pm and 7am.
