Gritty gritty bang bang! A warm winter welcome

-

FREEZIN’ the day, innit driver?” If I had a pound for every time I’d heard this phrase, I reckon I could fund that bridge from Scotland to Northern Ireland. Yes, we all woke up on Monday and thought, that’s winter here. A frosty reception awaited first thing, but enough about the other half.

Window scrapers made their winter debuts, the weans were warned to wear their “big jaikets” and the “it’s Baltic” patter was unleashed.

What a perfect oxymoron to be shivering at dusk and dawn while viewing some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets we’ve seen this year.

Easy on the eye, except when you’re driving. That was some seriously low glare.

Anyway, all this means one other thing – we’ll soon be joined on the roads by the gritters.

Or at least they used to be called gritters, nowadays they all have pun-tastic new names thanks to the famous Glasgow sense of humour. Here’s just a few of my favourites:

Chilly Connolly – this gritter is a big yin! Lew-ice Capaldi – loves to hold you while you grit…

Plougher O’Scotland – most often does the business in Mount Florida

Yes Sir Ice Can Boogie – as above!

Sir Andy Flurry – usually hits the streets about tennish…

Snowbegone Kenobi – when the gritter empire strikes back!

Spready Mercury – I want to break … ice?! Absolutely brilliant, eh!!! Heard a few of these on the radio this week and listeners phoned in with some fresh suggestions, no pun intended.

Among the many absolute stoaters, this was my top pick: She’s A Melter! Genius. Perfect. Classic Glasgow.

Now who can come up with snow-themed names for Glasgow taxis? Let’s hear you!

Stay safe.
