Rocks sunk by league leaders

- MARK WOODS

GLASGOW ROCKS dropped to seventh in the BBL after a 10576 drubbing at Leicester Riders last night.

Gareth Murray’s men, who visit Surrey Scorchers this evening, were out-scored 32-13 in a disastrous first quarter.

And with skipper Jonny Bunyan out through illness, the Scots fell as much as 39 behind in the fourth with Tyrell Green and Jordan Harris scoring 14 points apiece.

League leaders Leicester are now the BBL’s last unbeaten team after London Lions lost 96-84 at Newcastle Eagles.

Meanwhile, Great Britain cap Erin McGarrachan insists her decision to un-retire and join Caledonia Pride can lend the team’s young kids a hand.

The 29-year-old continues her comeback when the WBBL’s bottom side host Oaklands Wolves today.

The forward, who quit following a season in Austria in 2019, is already in the frame to feature for Scotland at this month’s Commonwealth Games qualifiers.

And although she’s juggling a new career in accountancy, McGarrachan has found a new lease of life.

“I always missed basketball,” she said. “My love for the game is still there. It never diminished.

“It was just the timing of getting back into things. I’m now only playing part-time around my job but that just means doing things away from the team to make sure that I’m up to speed. And when I’m with the team, making those minutes count.

“But I think the biggest thing I can bring us some experience and a level of calm by just talking to the girls. And just be an example of a good team-mate.”

McGarrachan, who also previously played in the US and for rivals Leicester, admits she is still shaking off the ring rust on a Caledonia team that has lost six games in a row but she will not be pushing for a GB recall.

“I think that’s passed me by. And I’m still carrying an injury in my foot which I constantly have to monitor and watch. So I’m just happy to be back on the floor, be back playing a good level and hopefully bring something to this young team that wasn’t there before.”
