Big-hearted student takes on touching challenge for gran

- BY KIRSTY FEERICK

ABIG-HEARTED student is taking on a touching challenge for her gran who suffers from dementia.

Eve McDonald will walk 250,000 steps for her 95-yearold grandmother, May Mckee, over the next month for her care home.

The 20-year-old, from Bearsden, came up with the thoughtful gesture to help out St Joseph’s Nursing and Residential Home in Robroyston.

It comes as her family saw May was “so happy” at the facility after they made the difficult decision to move her into a care home.

Eve, who is studying to be a primary school teacher, hopes to remove the “negative” stigma around care homes that puts some families off using them.

May was moved into the home after becoming confused and dizzy, meaning she relied on constant care.

Now Eve is thrilled to see her gran relaxed and happy so has decided to “give back” by raising money for the facility over the month of May.

Eve said: “It was a hard decision for my family to move her at first but it was definitely the right thing to do.

“I think a lot of people find it really hard to move family members into care homes, they have such a negative connotation, but they are actually really great.

“I know for my gran it has been the best thing because the staff have always been so friendly.

“She is just so happy there and they always have her in a good mood, you can tell they really care about her.

“I can’t remember my gran without dementia, it is a gradual condition that she has had for years, but I really enjoy my time with her.

“She doesn’t always know my name but she recognises who I am. I try to visit her once a week if I can, it was hard with Covid but now we can see her much more easily. It means a lot that I know the staff are looking after her so well so I just wanted to give something back.

“I start on Sunday and finish on May 31. It will be 25,000 steps over the full month.”
