Starfelt says it is only the beginning for Postecoglou

Defender feels title is start of special tenure with Champions League ahead

- JAMES CAIRNEY

CARL STARFELT insists that Celtic are just getting started under Ange Postecoglou as the central defender turned his attention towards a crack at the Champions League group stages next season.

The Swede was signed from Rubin Kazan last summer and formed a successful partnership with Spurs loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers as the Parkhead club reclaimed their Premiership crown.

The champions signed off their campaign in style with a 6-0 thrashing of Motherwell at Celtic Park on Saturday to get the title party under way.

Postecoglou told supporters that “bigger and better” things are on the way and with a return to European club football’s top table confirmed, Starfelt agrees with his manager’s assessment that he and his teammates can build on this year’s success and strive for more in the new campaign.

“For sure,” Starfelt said. “I think this can just be the start. A lot of players made their first year in the Celtic jersey this time and even though we came together pretty fast I think many players will only get better.

“And then we have the Champions League to look forward to next season as well. We know that’s a very tough competition so we have to improve.

“I think for sure that it’s possible. The demands at Celtic will always be so high and we will always strive to improve.

“You have to bring your best game in these matches. Also, as a team you have to really perform.

“Playing in Europe this year with this team and this manager I think will be helpful for us going forward and playing these big European matches.

“I can’t wait for it. The home games especially will be absolutely amazing. You have to be at your very best. One foot wrong and anything can happen. I am looking forward to it.”

Meanwhile, six people were arrested as Celtic fans celebrated the club’s title win.

Thousands of fans gathered in the Glasgow Cross area after the Motherwell win, which kicked off at 12.15pm.

Police described the level of antisocial behaviour among the crowd as “unacceptable”.

They made six arrests and issued four fixed-penalty fines amid the celebrations.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland said: “While there was an unacceptable level of anti-social behaviour and littering there were no serious incidents or disorder.

“There were some outbreaks of minor disorder and our officers acted swiftly and robustly to prevent escalation and protect safety.”*
