Fans turned Merchant City into a no-go zone
WITH regards to your report in yesterday’s edition on the Celtic title party which led to council staff working through the night to clean up the streets – it breached anti-social behaviour laws never mind the by-laws on drinking in public places as well as the litter laws.
Police Scotland stood and turned a blind eye, yet they closed public parks due to hooliganism but let these drunken thugs take over our Merchant City and with no respect to the tourist and locals going about their daily business.
Fans turned it into a no-go zone and now the taxpayer has to pay to clean up the city of all the broken bottles and flares strewn all over the place.
The council should send Celtic the bill and I think the Chief Constable should be held to account for his actions as to why this town was taken over by louts.
So next time there is any repeat, police should lift the lot.
They shouldn’t be selective and all businesses in the affected area should be compensated for lost revenue. Future title parties should be held inside the respective football club’s ground, not on our streets and placing the public’s safety in danger. Stephen Johnstone
