Kerr admits Dundee have to prove top-flight mettle
CAMMY KERR has called on Dundee to prove they have a bigclub mentality to ensure they bounce straight back up from relegation to the Championship.
The Dens Park side bowed out of the Premiership with Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Livingston after finally succumbing to the drop last midweek.
They claimed just six league victories – and only one after Mark McGhee replaced James McPake in February – in a dismal campaign after the high of last year’s promotion via their play-off victory over Kilmarnock.
Kerr, who will go into his 10th season as a first-team player with his boyhood heroes, admits Dundee under-performed and is convinced they should have had enough to stay in the top flight.
But, with Gordon Strachan set to lead an overhaul ahead of next term under a new younger manager after McGhee failed in his bid to stay in charge, the 26-year-old reckons the club needs a collective change in mentality as much as anything else.
The full-back said: “It’s not been a good season, especially
when we had the reward of last year of coming up. I thought it was a time for the club to really kick on and consolidate what should be a top-flight team.
“Certainly, it was a season to be in a better position than we are. The boys are gutted; there’s going to be boys moving on and things like that.
“I feel for the group, but the club needs to be in a better place than this. That’s not coming from my heart, that’s coming from my head.
“The club’s got to have a real direction now in what they want to do, and really kick on and be a big football club.”
