Pedestrian crossing at danger zone

- BY JACK THOMSON

A PEDESTRIAN crossing will be introduced on a busy four-lane road in Paisley after safety concerns were raised over the danger zone.

The works on Barrhead Road, between Hawkhead Roundabout and Lochfield Road, will be carried out in a matter of months.

Renfrewshire Council made the decision after frustration was voiced over “constant speeding” on the stretch, which is in the vicinity of Kingsley Care

Home and St Andrew’s Academy.

The road has a limit of 30mph but the speed monitoring sign is said to regularly clock drivers travelling between 40mph and 50mph.

Councillor Will Mylet, SNP representative for Paisley East and Central, said a crossing should help slow traffic down.

He said: “I’ve been discussing it with officers for a few years now.

“There is constant speeding on this road, which has four lanes of traffic and two bus stops on either side. This move will be good for slowing traffic down and helping care home residents or school children, who are trying to cross the road.

“It’s definitely important that they have some extra options, which can help them get across safely.”

The local authority said the “safe crossing point” will benefit local residents, school pupils and those in the care home.

A spokesperson confirmed preparatory work has been completed and contact made with Scottish Power about installation of the power supply.

They said: “We’ll be installing a new pedestrian crossing in autumn to provide a safe crossing point across the A726 Barrhead Road between Hawkhead Roundabout and Lochfield Road, benefiting local residents, school pupils and care home residents.

“We’ve done the preparatory work and applied to Scottish Power to install the power supply, after which we will complete the works.”
