Matt is hitting the heights with climbing firm thanks to £8k grant

- BY REBECCA NEWLANDS

ACLIMBING fanatic has officially launched his own centre in Hamilton with the help of a generous grant. Matt Meyerhoff fell in love with climbing and bouldering eight years ago and decided to turn his hobby into a business when he noticed a gap for a climbing centre in the Lanarkshire area.

With little experience in running a business, he approached Business Gateway who gave him advice and support.

Matt went on to acquire South Lanarkshire Council’s Business Grant worth £8000 and this was put towards the development of Hang On Climbing Centre.

Matt said: “I had little experience in starting or running my own business and so I really needed some direction when it came to turning Hang On Climbing Centre from an idea into a reality. “Business Gateway were just fantastic and really guided me through the whole process. I can’t thank them enough for their support.” Officially launched in early 2021, Hang On provides over 180 routes for bouldering, a type of free climbing that is exciting but safe, with crash mats for protection instead of ropes and harnesses. There are routes ranging from beginner level to advanced climbers, and the centre has attracted over 4000 visitors since its opening. After running three climbing competitions with free-to-watch finals, including the first round of the Scottish National Boulder League, Matt and his team plan to continue their efforts and run more competitions in the future.

John Strachan, Business Gateway adviser, said: “We were able to support Matt through a range of Business Gateway’s start-up services.

“Thanks to his hard work, Matt has cemented Hang On Climbing

Centre as the go-to attraction in Hamilton and South Lanarkshire.

“As we approach the summer holidays, I’m looking forward to watching the business progress further.”
