Man drove while using phone and also had no insurance

- BY LAUREN BROWNLIE

A MAN was banned from driving and ordered to carry out unpaid work after appearing in court charged with road traffic offences.

John Brown was driving on Ashgill Road when police spotted him using a mobile phone at 3.30pm on January 24, 2020.

Officers pulled the car over and carried out checks. It was revealed Brown, 24, was not insured.

In another incident a few days later on January 29, Brown was spotted by cops at 2.20pm on Scaraway Street. Being aware that he would be driving with no insurance, they turned to follow his vehicle.

Whilst behind, they observed him excessively accelerate and drive at excessive speeds.

Officers slowed down due to heavy rainfall and a slippery road surface. They were still able to see Brown, who drove straight over a roundabout, failing to give way.

Due to the weather conditions and speed, police didn’t start a pursuit.

Brown’s lawyer revealed the social work report was “fairly positive” and suggested imposing an unpaid work

order.

Sheriff Simone Sweeney said: “The concern for me is that it’s not his first driving offence.

“He was charged with driving with no insurance in 2018 – what was the outcome?” The defence solicitor replied: “Forty hours unpaid work. He accepts he shouldn’t have been driving but took a chance.

“He seems to accept that immaturity has got a lot to do with this and he does say that to the social worker.”

Brown, of Milton, was ordered to carry out 90 hours of unpaid work. He was disqualified from driving and also ordered to pay a £245 fine.
