Festive post box topper is ‘ lifting’ spirits of residents

- BY MORGAN CARMICHAEL

AFESTIVE postbox topper is said to be “lifting” the spirits of the community this week. Outside the Thornwood Post Office on Dumbarton Road, a mysterious knitter has placed a Christmas crochet on top of the West End postbox.

The design features Santa by a chimney, with his sack of toys and sleigh.

The new festive design is the latest by the knitter, who is said to place new designs on the box fairly regularly.

Many of these crochet toppers are appearing all over the city, including Marylee and Langside Place, but locals in the West End are loving the new Partick addition.

Aaron Wallace, 35, from the area, said: “I like this one.

“I’m not usually that Christmassy but it certainly gets you in the spirit, doesn’t it?

“I saw the woman doing it last night, the designs seem to change every few weeks.”

Jerry Connoly, 68, from Dumbarton, said: “I think it’s brilliant.

“It’s been going on for a few months now, there have been different seasons and they’ve all been really nice.

“I don’t know who is doing it, but I like to take photographs of them and all that.

“It’s really well made, and nice. It lifts my spirits.”

A local passer- by, Paul, added: “It must take hours to produce something like that.

“It’s just brilliant, and every time I walk past it’s something different.

“I’m sure it makes everybody smile when they walk past.”

Even the Thornwood Post Office commented on the design, saying: “I think it’s pretty good.

“There’s a lot of time and effort that obviously goes into it. I think they’ve done a great job. All the kids seem to just love it.”
