New 5000sq m facility for road salt being built in city
ANEW 5000 sqm facility for road salt is being built in Glasgow. Peel Ports Clydeport ( PPC) has begun construction of the shed at the George V dock after securing a multi- million- pound joint investment with the Irish Salt Mining Company, also known as Salt Sales Co.
Once completed, the facility will be able to hold 40,000 tonnes of salt which will be shipped directly from Salt Sales Co’s mine in Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland.
The firm is a key supplier of de- icing rock salt across Scotland, as well as highway maintenance contractors.
PPC staff will unload the salt from the ships arriving at the port and either load lorries to deliver to customers or add the salt to the stockpile shed.
With the specialist facilities on the new site, which will be completed next year, shipments of 7000 tonnes can be done in 12 hours.
In the future, the facility will also serve as a storage hub for stockpiling salt ahead of potentially treacherous winter months.
Jim McSporran, port director at Peel Ports Clydeport, said: “It’s great to partner with a customer that we already have such a great working relationship with, and our site has the ideal combination of location, space, and facilities to support such an important project.
“This new facility will be supplying council road salt depots across West and Central Scotland and will be key in helping to meet tough demands during harsh winters.
“Given the unpredictability of Scottish weather, this deal will add vital resilience to the road salt market in this country for many years to come.”
