Two men stabbed in pub as drinkers tackle knifeman
ATHUG stabbed two strangers after being told a pub would not take card payments. Patrick Burns carried out the attacks at the Waverley Bar in Glasgow’s Tollcross on November 19, 2021.
Prosecutor Lindsey Dalziel said the 27- year- old had gone there alone having briefly been at another nearby pub.
Miss Dalziel told the High Court in Glasgow: “He inquired if [ staff] accepted card payments.
“Having then been told it was cash only, he left.”
But, Burns soon returned yelling: “I’m only here for a pint.”
He seen clutching a knife before other drinkers tackled him.
Victims Steven Jarvis and Jay McKee were in the pub separately with friends.
Amid the chaos, Mr Jarvis was pulled down and ended up on the ground before being stabbed by Burns.
Around the same time, Mr McKee was knifed on the arm.
Others in the bar eventually got the blade off Burns.
The court heard Mr Jarvis suffered three wounds to the body resulting in both his lungs collapsing.
He has been scarred for life and “deeply affected” by what happened.
He also feels his lungs are not back working to full capacity.
Mr McKee meantime needed eight stitches for two arm wounds.
Burns, of the city’s Parkhead, pleaded guilty to assaulting both men to their severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
Prosecutors also stated it was to the permanent impairment and danger of life of Mr Jarvis.
Calum Weir, defending, said what happened was “perplexing” and “did not make obvious sense”.
The lawyer added: “He had attended the licensed premises and attempted to pay by card.
“He was then followed out by patrons unknown to him.
“He says he was assaulted at this point.
“He chose to go back and acted in the manner described.”
Lord Arthurson jailed Burns for five years.
The judge said: “You created a significant disturbance.
The victims were customers wholly unknown to you.”
