Plant- based Glasgow cafe set to re- open

- BY MARISSA MACWHIRTER

APOPULAR vegan cafe in Glasgow city centre is set to re- open under new management following the ‘ devastating’ closure in November.

Glasvegan, at St Enoch Square, is set to re- open in January under the helm of new owner Tyler Lewington.

Tyler, originally from the Orkney islands, has dreamt of having his own restaurant after working in the hospitality trade for years.

He said: “I was always keeping my eyes peeled for an opportunity to realise my dream since I moved to Glasgow three years ago.

“I’ve frequented many vegan eateries since moving here due to being a long- time vegan – and probably the first in Orkney truth be told.

“And so when the opportunity arose from the Glasvegan I just had to see what I could do.

“A place I loved, with the ideas I love and the opportunity to make it all happen was on the cards.

“So I emailed Arita the previous owner asking to set up a meeting and here we are.”

Tyler, who has experience working in all positions in the hospitality trade from kitchen porter to restaurant manager, is keen about the new venture.

The name of the cafe will still be Glasvegan and Tyler will be working on- site as the manager.

He said: “Re- opening the cafe is the same for me as it is for the rest of the community.

“People were rightly upset to lose their ethical wee hub in the city centre and I was the same.

“So opening it up again is very exciting, the opportunity to create that environment again and continue the mission Arita began when she opened the cafe five years ago.”

Under the new ownership, Glasvegan will be serving an updated menu with new items for customers to enjoy as well as old favourites.

Coffee aficionados can get excited about a new focus on speciality hot drinks.

Tyler said: “We will also be overhauling the coffee system to increase the quality, standard, and efficiency of the coffee in the cafe and introduce loyalty cards to match the change.”

The opening date is expected to be January 14 as Veganuary is under way.
