Only way is up for Wright at St Johnstone

- IAIN COLLIN

DREY WRIGHT is convinced the only way is up for St Johnstone after they only avoided going down last season by the skin of their teeth.

Wright left Saints for Hibernian in 2020, missing the highs of the double cup triumph of two seasons ago and then the lows of finishing 11th in the Premiership last term. Only a nervy play- off against Inverness Caley Thistle ensured they still have top- flight football to play.

After returning to McDiarmid Park in the summer, the 27- year- old is revelling in an extended run of games. Whilst he is satisfied he is returning to the form he showed prior to his departure, Wright is also reassured that, despite consecutive defeats to Celtic and Hearts, the travails of last year are now in the past and better times are ahead.

“We can make this a really big year for the club,” he said ahead of the visit of Dundee United. “I wasn’t here last season but it wasn’t great. It will never be a nice environment to be in if you’re struggling at the wrong end of the table.

“We’ve got a good points total on the board and we’re determined to keep that going, starting against

Dundee United on Monday. We’re definitely looking up the way.

“Early on in the season, we went on a run of games when we weren’t picking up enough points but we put that right. We gelled as a team and went on a really good spell of form.

“We got our results in all sorts of different ways – controlling games, coming from behind and nicking points. That’s a great attribute to have in this league.

“We’ll dust ourselves down and look ahead to Dundee United.

“It’s a local derby, it will be a good atmosphere and we’re playing a team coming off a win.

“Our confidence will still be there because we know the character we’ve got in that dressing room.

“The first goal will be very important, as it so often is in this league.”
