- BY CONNOR GORDON

ARACIST thug who spat on a pol ice officer was jailed today for 14 months. Steven Smith lashed out at PC Josh Kay at Glasgow’s London Road police office on July 29, last year.

The 40- year- old was earlier picked up after entering motor vehicles which did not belong to him.

Smith hurled abuse at a paramedic who tried to help him from one of the cars he was found sleeping in.

He went on to call the owner of the same car a “black b******.”

Smith pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

He also admitted assaulting a paramedic and PC Kay, as well as stealing power tools from a van and possession of a knife in a public space without a reasonable excuse or lawful authority.

The court heard Smith was caught sleeping in a car which did not belong to him in the city’s Croftfoot.

He was later verbally abusive to paramedics who attended and roused him, telling one: “I’m going to punch you on the face.”

The owner of the car Naveed Baqai appeared with his mother Zakia Baqai who were called “black b****** s”.

Smith went on to throw a bottle at two of the paramedics but contact was not made.

Smith then entered a Honda Civic at the driver’s side, where it is thought he made an attempt to drive off.

Mr Baqai meantime recorded the incidents and followed Smith, who then entered a Mercedes Sprinter van.

The owner later told officers that a file and a nail gun worth £ 440 had been taken from the van.

Smith went on to enter a garden, where he picked up a stone and threw it at Mr Baqai but missed.

He also tried to get into an open window but was told to leave by the homeowner.

Police caught up with the dad- of- one and arrested him.

Smith went on to act out in his cell by banging his head against the wall.

Tina McGrady, defending, told the court that Smith had no memory of the incident as he was under the influence of drugs.
