McGhee saves point in Stark’s Park stalemate

- DARREN JOHNSTONE

DUNDEE missed out on the chance to climb to the Championship summit after needing a Jordan McGhee equaliser to extract a point from last night’s entertaining clash at Raith Rovers.

It was a classic game of two halves after the home deservedly went in at the break in front through Aidan Connolly’s effort. However, Dundee manager Gary Bowyer’s triple halftime change paid off in a vastly improved second half display.

In a bright start by Raith, captain Scott Brown lashed an effort just wide after only five minutes. The home team saw plenty of the ball early on but Dundee still looked dangerous on the attack.

Dundee defender Cammy Kerr lifted a half- volley over the bar from distance before Rovers striker Jamie Gullan brought out a routine save in keeper Adam Legdzins after combining with striker partner Lewis Vaughan.

The away team then wasted a great chance to take the lead in the 34th minute when Paul McMullan was sent one- on- one with Jamie MacDonald. McMullan raced into the box but could only push his curling shot round the post from close range.

And the visitors were made to pay for that miss when Rovers went ahead seven minutes before the break.

Goalscorer Connolly was involved in the build up to tee up Dylan Easton for a cross and was then on hand to tap in from close range after connecting with Liam Dick’s cross.

Dundee boss Bowyer was clearly not happy with his team’s first- half display after making a triple change at the break, bringing on Alex Jakubiak, Lukę McCowan and Cillian Sheridan, almost bringing instant results.

Raith keeper Jamie MacDonald brilliantly kept out McCowan from six yards before getting down to Jordan Marshall’s drive in the same move.

The post repelled another McCowan effort from distance in the 64th minute after the midfielder did well to create room for a shot, with the rebound rolling into MacDonald’s arms.

The goal was coming and after MacDonald tipped a Sweeney header over McGhee levelled in the 79th minute when he headed Kerr’s cross in from six yards.
