Music student set for dream spot supporting star Capaldi at city gig

- BY REBECCA NEWLANDS

AMUSIC student and rising star will support Lewis Capaldi at his upcoming Glasgow gig. The Someone You Loved singer performs at the Hydro on January 24, and warming up the crowd will be Broghan Showell, known by her stage name Broghan.

The 20- year- old, from Hamilton, is studying BA in Music Performance at New College Lanarkshire ( NCL). She received the news from her tutor that she and her bandmates will open Lewis’ show.

Broghan said: “I got a phone call from my lecturer Scott Cowie to tell me I was supporting Lewis Capaldi at the Hydro.

“I was in the middle of packing to go on holiday the next day. I was completely shocked. I thought Scott was joking. When I realised he wasn’t, I burst into tears! Happy tears though.”

She will be joined by her backing band which consists of fellow NCL students Ryan Fyffe on drums, Lauren Kelly on keys and backing vocals, Connor Frame playing guitar, and Rhys Walker on bass.

Broghan added: “It’s a little cheesy, but we all honestly feel it’s more than a music course, we’re all really close and continue to have an incredible experience together.

“Clearly, we are all part of something that has been building for years and when you get the biggest star in the world showing how much he loves the college and feels proud to still be a part of it in a way, it tells you all you need to know.”

Capaldi was a student at NCL and has since maintained a close link with his alma mater, and back in September students were stunned when he paid a visit for a Q& A. He spoke of his “fond memories” at the college and said his visit was the “most rewarding thing I’ve ever done”.

Broghan’s lecturer Scott Cowie said: “It’s absolutely brilliant that the students are getting this opportunity.

“Lewis had the idea of surprising the guys earlier this year when he visited for a Q& A session and they have not stopped talking about it since his visit and are totally inspired.

“I am thrilled that he stills wants to contribute to a place that means so much to him and has provided this incredible opportunity for our students.”

Broghan is looking forward to the gig and added: “It will be a really proud moment for us, a career highlight, and another part of this incredible story which is hopefully just beginning.”
