City widen gap at top in nine- goal thumping

- ALAN CAMPBELL

GLASGOW CITY extended their lead at the top of the SWPL to six points following an 8- 1 demolition of Dundee United at Gussie Park. Closest challengers Rangers were held 0- 0 by Hearts and drop down to third behind Celtic, who beat bottom side Glasgow Women 8- 0.

Game of the day was at Oriam and Hearts head coach Eva Olid was delighted with the outcome. Her side remain fourth and she said: “Teams do not believe they can get a result against the top three.

“This has to make us believe that we can beat them, and we can fight in the future to be in that top three.”

For all their possession Rangers created very few chances against a well organised Hearts. When they did, home goalkeeper Charlotte Parker- Smith denied them with fine saves from Chelsea Cornet and Kirsty Howat ( twice).

Leanne Ross made it three wins from three as Glasgow City interim head coach. It has been a highly impressive start by the former club captain, with 16 goals scored and just one conceded.

Erin Greening led the way against United with a hat- trick, while the league’s top scorer, Lauren Davidson, added another to her total.

As well as moving ahead of Rangers, Celtic’s emphatic win has given the best goal difference. Amy Gallacher scored four of the eight goals, adding to a hat- trick in the previous Sunday’s Scottish Cup win over Falkirk.

Partick Thistle, like Hearts, are relative SWPL newcomers and are also enjoying their best season. They remain sixth, following a 3- 0 home win over Spartans.

In the other games Hibernian beat Motherwell 2- 0. It was the same scoreline at Balmoral Stadium, with Aberdeen getting only their third win and pushing Hamilton Accies down to second bottom of the table.
