Families celebrate opening of new £ 5.1m nursery

- BY SARAH CAMPBELL

SOUTHSIDE families and guests were treated to a very sp e c ial mu s ic a l performance yesterday to mark the official opening of a new £ 5.1 million nursery.

The Victoria Road Nursery welcomed its first pupils in September last year, merging classes from Cuthbertson Nursery and the former Govanhill Nursery at a new site within the grounds of Cuthbertson Primary School.

Eager to show off their new space for learning, a talented group of youngsters took to the stage for a programme of cheerful tunes including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, sung in both English and

Urdu, and a lively rendition of The Wheels on The Bus.

Following the sing- song, headteacher Nicola George said: “We just love our new home here at the Victoria Road Nursery and we’re so excited to welcome families here today for a celebration.

“Since opening in September, it’s already become such an important part of the Govanhill community.

“Everyone is buzzing.”

As well as a covered outdoor area, which will allow children to play outside no matter what the unpredictable Glasgow weather brings, the innovative learning facility uses eco- friendly technology to align with Glasgow City Council’s target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

The headteacher continued: “All of these features are great for the environment but also give the children the chance to learn about the technology and understand its impact on the environment.

“We have solar panels and a rain tank as well, it’s such a fabulous space.

“We’re looking forward to being here for many years to come.”

Rounding off an afternoon of festivities, councillor Christina Cannon, city convener for education, unveiled an impressive golden

She said: “Days like today are definitely the best part of the job.

“It’s great for the parents to come along and see the space and the children have clearly put a lot of work into their musical performance.

“This is a wonderful new building for the local area, but it is the children and staff now and in the future that will see Victoria Road Nursery flourish and shine.”
