City stay in front as top three go on goal spree
GLASGOW CITY, Celtic and Rangers hit their opponents for six, eight and seven on a day of high scoring at the top of the SWPL. City remain five points clear of Celtic and seven ahead of Rangers, who have a game in hand.
The leaders, who have been revitalised in the four games under interim head coach Leanne Ross, were two goals up after just six minutes against Hamilton Accies at Petershill Park. Priscila Chinchilla, making her first start following a hamstring injury, got both.
Central defender Jenna Clark added two more before half time, with striker Emily Whelan making it 5- 0 almost immediately after the re- start.
It looked ominous for Hamilton, whose goalkeeper Chloe Nicholson made a number of outstanding saves, but there was only one further goal, scored by Kinga Kozak a minute from the end.
Celtic, who could only draw their game in hand against Motherwell last midweek, returned to goalscoring form with an 8- 0 hammering of Partick Thistle. Amy Gallacher and Chloe Craig both scored twice to contribute to Thistle’s heaviest defeat of the season.
Two games in less than four days was too much for Motherwell, who, having held Celtic to 0- 0, lost 7- 0 to Rangers at the K Park. Midfielder Tessel Middag and striker Kayla McCoy got two apiece.
Fourth- placed Hearts continued their best season with a 1- 0 win over Aberdeen at Balmoral Stadium. Fullback Emma Brownlie scored with a free- kick 11 minutes from time.
Hibs head coach Dean Gibson did not have anything to celebrate on the third anniversary of being appointed to the job. His side lost 2- 1 to Spartans at Meadowbank Stadium, and are now eight points behind Hearts.
The day’s final game saw yet another defeat for bottom club Glasgow Women. They remain without a point after 15 games following a 2- 1 defeat to the other promoted club, Dundee United.
