A MAN accelerated down a one- way city centre street and narrowly avoided police officers.

Steven Hosie, 37, drove dangerously in Glasgow city centre’s Queen Street on July 3, 2021. Hosie refused to stop for two officers on the road who had to take evasive action to avoid being struck.

He had earlier driven against the flow of traffic off the one- way road and almost hit two cars heading towards him.

Hosie pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving and a separate charge of drink- driving.

The court heard Hosie drove past a no entry sign from Ingram Street into Queen Street which is a one- way system.

Hosie “drove against the flow of traffic” and almost struck two vehicles that were coming towards him.

Numerous pedestrians were also in the area at the time.

Prosecutor Gemma Barclay said: “Two officers attempted to approach the vehicle and were wearing hi- vis body armour.

“They signalled for the vehicle to stop but they were required to take evasive action.

“The vehicle had accelerated at them causing them to move away.”

A third officer further down the road used his baton to strike Hosie’s windscreen.

Hosie stopped and after a brief attempt to escape, he was arrested.

He was tested and found to have 97.8 microgrammes in his breath when the legal limit is 22 microgrammes.

Greg Cunningham, defending, told the sentencing: “It was very bad driving and even worse decision- making.

“He is embarrassed and ashamed.”

It was revealed that Hosie has a previous conviction of driving without insurance from 2017.

Sheriff Bernard Ablett said: “This was a serious offence of dangerous driving – I am going to impose a community payback order.”

The dad- of- one, of the city’s Cardonald, was ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid work and disqualified from driving for 20 months.
