School safety New crossings planned for traffic hotspot

- By BEN COLEY AND ROBIN JENKINS

TWO zebra crossings are to be created in Two Hedges Road in Bishop’s Cleeve. They will be located close to the front access of Cleeve School, between Linworth Road and Dale Walk.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire County Council , which is behind the measure, said: “To help improve safety for Cleeve School, pupils and residents living on Two Hedges Road, zebra crossings are being installed as part of the school’s expansion.”

He added that he could not, at this stage, say when the crossings would be installed.

Cleeve School is one of the largest in the county and looks likely to take even more pupils soon because a sixth form centre is being built.

Two Hedges Road can be a busy road, especially when pupils are arriving for the school day or leaving at the end of it.

There is also a sports centre at the eastern end of the site, which is used by the public out of school hours.

Principal Alwyn Richards said: “Cleeve School is delighted that the two zebra crossings are being introduced to Two Hedges Road.

“First and foremost, our overriding focus is on the safety and well-being of our students.

“Students now have a better opportunity to cross the road safely, as they arrive and as they leave, on a day by day basis.

“This is reassuring for the school and for the parents.”

The county council says there have been a number of collisions along Two Hedges Road outside of school hours.

A total of five collisions have occurred in the past five years, of which two have been serious.

Councillor Peter Richmond, of Bishop’s Cleeve Parish Council, said: “The crossings are going to help, but when changes to the road like this are made the potential for mistakes is enormous.

“We don’t want any problems in the future, so the parish council will be following up the travel plan by installing Vehicle Activated Signs in the area to make people aware of their own speed.” echo.news@reachplc.com
