Making the grade Delight as students top national target

- By ROBIN JENKINS

ALWYN Richards was bubbling with excitement on A-level results day. The principal of Cleeve School in Bishop’s Cleeve said good results and a major infrastructure improvement meant there was a lot to look forward to.

In all, 24.9 per cent of entries at A Level or equivalent achieved either a grade A*, A or equivalent.

This surpassed the targets set for individual pupils based on the average attainment of the top 25 per cent of pupils nationally.

A total of 50.1 per cent of exam entries were graded A*-B and the pass rate within the sixth form was 99 per cent.

Mr Richards said: “These are once again a very good set of examination results, particularly in terms of the progress the students have made from their varied starting points.

“These outcomes, across a range of Level 3 qualifications, reflect our continued high ambitions for our school and for our students.

“We feel very excited about our future and particularly so at a time when our new Sixth Form Centre of Excellence is about to open.

“This development symbolises the school’s high aspirations for every student, starting in Year 7 and progressing through to the sixth form.”

He added: “Well done to all the staff who have worked so hard and very special congratulations to all of the stu- dents who have achieved so well and now have so much to look forward to as they embark on the next stages of their lives.”

Max Minter, the top achiever at the school, was all smiles after getting three A*s and an A.

The 17-year-old, from Fairview in Cheltenham, was pretty pleased with himself, saying: “It was down to work – lot and lots of revision.”

He is off to study engineering at Cambridge University and beyond that hopes to work in the engineering side of Formula 1.

“It’s more the cars than the drivers that interest me. What they can do with the cars has always drawn me to it,” he said. robin.jenkins@reachplc.com
