Head’s joy after results day at ‘so many happy faces’

- By ROBIN JENKINS

HEADTEACHER Russel Ellicot had one simple answer as to why Pate’s Grammar School recorded its best set of A-level results.

The key statistics were that 92 per cent of grades achieved by the 713 pupils were A* to B.

And 34 pupils got three or more A* grades, which Mr Ellicott said was “really high”.

He said: “The overall results are better than ever. The reason for it is the outstanding teachers.”

He added that the results had been achieved despite what he hoped had been a once in a lifetime change in the structure of the exams.

“Teachers have done a tremendous job to make sure pupils get the results they deserve.

“I’m delighted to see so many happy faces,” he said.

More than 30 of the school’s pupils are due to move on to study at the esteemed universities in Cambridge or Oxford.

And one, Will Crisp, is set to study at the world-renowned Harvard University in the United States.

Thom Keen hopes to become a diplomat after getting A in Spanish and Bs in both German and French.

Now he plans to learn Finnish and Russian from scratch at University College London.

The 18-year-old from Cirencester said: “I want a career in diplomacy. I’m probably arriving just at the right time, with Brexit and everything.

“Relations with Russia have been dodgy recently so there will be scope for diplomats in that area.” robin.jenkins@reachplc.com
