Late agony Cirencester sunk by last-gasp winner in derby clash
CIRENCESTER Town fell to a derby defeat at the hands of Cinderford Town at the Corinium Stadium.
The Foresters took the points with a Ben Watkins goal in added-time.
Cinderford who had the first pot at goal when Lewis Binns fired over from the edge of the box before Cirencester’s Ben Whitehead fired into the net but his joy was shortlived as he was rulked offside.
Matt Wieczorek pushed a Dan Mcdonald effort round his left post and a period of pressure followed from the visitors as Craig Norman, Lorcan Sheehan and Richard Greaves came close.
Cirencester began the second half with a bit more urgency as Whitehead and Aidan Bennett fired wide.
Cirencester were pressing strongly but Cinderford won the ball on half way and fed it to Watkins who fired home the winner.
Cirencester had opened their season on Saturday with a solid 4-1 victory at Bristol Manor Farm.
Cirencester went ahead as a fine move down the right flank involving Alan Griffin, Tommy Anderson and Whitehead led to a block on the line and Anderson headed home.
Five minutes later Cirencester doubled their lead when a mix-up between ‘keeper and defender resulted in Whitehead collecting the loose ball on the edge of the box and firing into an empty net.
As the half drew to a close the home side pulled a goal back as Owen Howe collected a corner near the edge of the six yard box and saw his partially blocked effort loop over the defender on the line and drop under the bar.
Griffin volleyed home from the edge of the box to make it 3-1 and on 90 minutes Jordan Morris cut-in from the right to score and secure the three points.
Evesham went down 1-0 at league newboys Melksham, with Niekell Plummer on target.
