Clements is set to stay as Debayo leaves Robins

-

CHRIS Clements is set to extend his stay at Cheltenham Town, but Josh Debayo’s exit has been confirmed after he rejected the contract offer made to him at the end of the season.

Clements, 30, made 26 appearances in all competitions last season and is set to sign a new deal.

But Debayo, 23, will seek a new club elsewhere after two seasons at the Jonny-rocks Stadium.

Signed in July 2018 after leaving Leicester City where he had been a part of their under-23 set-up, he made his debut for the club on the opening day of the 2018/19 season, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Crawley Town.

He spent a large part of his first season at Cheltenham on loan at National League club Dover Athletic.

He returned for the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign and went onto make nine appearances - his last being as a second half substitute in the 1-1 draw with Port Vale before Christmas.

He was offered new terms after the club’s exit from the League Two playoffs.

Because he is under 24 and was offered a new contract, the club is entitled to receive compensation if he signs for another club in England.

If he chooses to sign for a club abroad, Cheltenham will not receive any compensation as due to the coronavirus crisis the club were not in a position to offer him a deal 60 days before his contract expired.

The club made a conscious decision not to make an early contract offer so if Debayo’s next move is not to an English club he will be allowed to move for free.
