Wood flies to personal best in long jump

CHELTENHAM Harriers athletes are slowly returning to competitio­n in good numbers, with some excellent performanc­es.

A late summer season on the track and field has seen Alfie Wood excel with a big long jump personal best at Charnwood, winning the competitio­n with a jump of 6.63m, which ranks him seventh Under-17 in the UK for 2020.

Ruth and Mel Bird travelled to Bournemout­h and competed in the shot put, discus and hammer.

They both threw PBS in the shot put with Ruth’s throw ranking her 3rd all-time on the Vet 55 rankings, with strong performanc­es across all three events.

Other throwers competing included Andrew Walker who finished second in the under 20 discus at Yeovil with a throw of 38.40 and Oliver Risborough achieving a PB in the javelin throwing 33.26.

Under-15 Billy Buxton also competed in Yeovil and achieved a PB of 37.13, but the following day he took things up a level throwing an age group Harriers club record of 38.28 to mark a good weekend’s work.

Loughborou­gh University student George Watson, ran a solid 8.35 3k at Lea Valley in London on his return to racing.

At the Castle Coombe motor racing circuit over a 5k road course, Caroline Cotterell motored to victory and was first F50 in 21:05 and Nick Holliday was first M60 in 18:57.

Ellis Woolley has raced twice since lockdown, with the under-13 running 2.37 for 800m in Nuneaton, then stepping up to run a 5k PB at the Bath two tunnels race in 21.19.
